Shamrocks and Shenanigans: St. Patrick's Day Activities for Kids
Being a child is Magical. There’s Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Unicorns, Mermaids, and of course, Leprechauns. That’s why we Love St Patrick’s Day, and the Fun, Family Traditions that we Incorporate into this Mischievous Holiday.
It’s time to get a Little Creative, get a Little Green, and Catch Some Leprechauns!
St Patrick’s Day Fun for the Family
Our Family Loves any excuse to Celebrate throughout the Year.
St Patrick’s Day is a Wonderful, Magical Holiday that is so much fun for all of us. It might not be as popular as some other Holidays on the Calendar, but it’s a Great Excuse for some Leprechaun Magic and Fun with the Kids.
And this Holiday is particularly Special to our Family. We are Very Lucky to have our very own Irish Princess in the House. Our Isla was born on St Patrick’s Day. She thinks it’s great fun that the Leprechauns come to visit on her Birthday!
Our Celebration incorporates some Crafts, some Treats, and some Happy Family Time. Here are some of our Favourite Traditions. I hope you enjoy them!
Leprechaun Traps
What is your Family Leprechaun Myth? If you catch one, does he lead you to a Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow? Do you get Three Wishes?
No matter what you believe about these Mischevous Creatures, it sure is fun to get the Kids involved in trying to catch them! That’s why every year, on the Eve of St Patrick’s Day, we make Leprechaun Traps with the Kids in the hopes of catching our very own Leprechaun.
It lets us all be Creative and we Spend Quality Time Together as a Family.
There is no guide or limit to the Imagination when it comes to creating Leprechaun traps. But here’s my very basic step by step guide:
- Find enough boxes for each member of the family (any size, but they don’t have to be big).
- Cut one side of the box so you have a three-sided flap that can fold up. It should look like a doggie door.
- Cover the boxes in Green Paper or Paint.
- Punch a few holes in the box so you can use Ribbon to Tie up the door.
- Alternatively, you can cut a square hole into the side of the box and attach some rolled up paper to the box.
- Decorate the traps!
For Decorating, I grab all the Green Craft Supplies I can Find in my Collection. You could gather some feathers, pom poms, glitter, crepe paper, and even cut outs of shamrocks, pots of gold, or leprechaun hats. Then, let the kids (and adults) have fun with some glue, scissors, and tape as you decorate the boxes.
After our Leprechaun Traps are made we hide Leprechaun Food inside to tempt the Leprechauns into our traps. Our Favourite Leprechaun Food is Oats & Green Food Dye.

Leprechaun Mischief
Each St Patrick’s Day Morning the Kids awake to find that the Leprechauns have caused chaos throughout the house. It’s So Fun for my partner and me to come up with all sorts of Little, Funny Messes for the Leprechauns to Make.
Some of our Favourite Mischief includes:
- Making Green Milk
- Tying the Kids doors together
- Putting their Toothbrushes in the Fridge
- Knocking over some Chairs
- “Decorating” with Toilet Paper
The ideas are Endless and the Kids faces in the morning are Priceless. Here are some pictures of our Leprechaun Mischief.
St Patricks Day Morning
Every St Patrick’s Day Morning, the Kids wake up to see if they’ve caught a Leprechaun. They have yet to actually catch any. But they have been Lucky enough that the Leprechauns have left behind some Treats. One year they even woke to find they had Leprechaun Kisses on their faces!
Usually, the Leprechauns that Visit our House leave the Kids Gold Chocolate Coins. One year they also left St Patrick’s Day Dress-Ups for the Kids to wear and play in. There is also often a cheeky note left to the kids amidst the mess!
If you want to Continue some St Patrick’s Day Celebrations, you could make a Delicious Green Breakfast, with coloured pancakes and green fruits. You could also make a Yummy, Sweet Green Treat or Two by modifying my Party Wafers or Chocolate Spoons to be Green and Delicious.
We can only keep trying to catch a Leprechaun each year, but I think our Kids are pretty happy with the Alternative. Here they are with their Leprechaun Treats!
